- PORTRAIT PAINTING OF A EUROPEAN NOBLEMAN,
PORTRAIT PAINTING OF A EUROPEAN NOBLEMAN, FULL LENGTHContinental school, possibly Spanish, oil on canvas life-sized portrait of a nobleman depicted standing full length in an interior setting against a draped background and red carpet. The subject has grey hair and facial hair and is attired in an ermine-trimmed embroidered short cloak or cape emblazoned with a red Crusaders or Templar cross, an ornate gold livery collar or chain of office around his upper shoulders with central griffin, black leather pants and boots, with his right hand on a short sword and his left hand resting on the handle of a sword visible at his hip. Housed in a modern carved gilt Hudson River style frame from Bennett Galleries, Knoxville. First quarter of 19th century or earlier. Sight: 81 1/2" H x 35 1/2" W. Framed: 92" H x 45 1/2" W. Note: The gold livery collar is similar to those conferred to the Chivalric Order the Jar/Griffin, founded by Ferdinand I of Aragon in 1403. The jar of lilies links symbolize the Virgin Mary while the griffin can be interpreted as a symbol of war against the infidel. This painting may depict Ferdinand I or one of his Castilian descendants as the original Crest of Castile and Leon featured a golden griffin. This crest fell out of use in the 15th century as the griffin was replaced by a lion.
Condition:
Painting is in overall good condition with areas of retouch and later varnishing visible throughout under UV light inspection, primarily to the background. Canvas is lined, and stretcher appears to be contemporary.

- RARE ROMAN TERRACOTTA MURMILLO GLADIATOR
RARE ROMAN TERRACOTTA MURMILLO GLADIATOR FIGURERoman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. This is an outstanding example of a gladiator figure made from terracotta wielding a short sword and holding up a shield. He hands with legs slightly bent in a ready position, dressed in greaves, and brimmed and crested helmet identifying him as a murmillo. The shield or scutum covers his chest and face in defense as he faces his opponent. Murmillo figures like this example were typically presented opposite a Thracian fighter wearing similar armor. This figure has great remains of white pigments indicating he was brightly painted at one time. Size: 2.5" L x 3" W x 6.25" H (6.4 cm x 7.6 cm x 15.9 cm); 6.5" H (16.5 cm) on included custom stand.
Brutal gladiator fights were popular entertainment in the Roman World, and although the fighters that lived through enough fights could gain a celebrity status, these men were usually slaves, criminals, prisoners, or freed men who chose the profession- likely due to dire circumstance. The gladiators had specific fighting tactics as indicated by armor and weapons- here the murmillo is a gladiator of Gallic origin. The murmillo gladiators replaced the earlier Gallus warriors (named after the Gauls). By the reign of Augustus, the Gauls had integrated with the Romans, and it became distasteful to portray them as enemies. Hence, the Gallus class gladiator was replaced by the murmillo. The murmillo's fighting style was suited for men that were tall and very strong to carry the weight of the large shield, helmet, and sword. The popularity of the sport spread throughout the empire and miniature depictions of these fighters were produced for fans, often made of either terracotta or bronze.
For a similar example of this figure please see the Metropolitan Museum of Art's website, accession number: 10.210.78.

- ATTIC BLACK FIGURE AMPHORA, LIGHT-MAKE
ATTIC BLACK FIGURE AMPHORA, LIGHT-MAKE CLASSGreece, Attic, Light-Make Class, ca. 540 to 480 BCE. An exceptional pottery neck amphora, meticulously decorated with hand-painted black-figure technique attributed to the Light-Make Class - a group of Athenian painters whose vases featured black-figure often on white ground. Sitting upon a discoid foot, the opulent vessel displays a bulbous body with a narrow base, a broad, rounded shoulder, a concave neck, and a flared rim. A pair of arched handles gracefully connect neck to shoulder. Skillfully painted, Side A exhibits a lively scene of 3 warriors in battle, all dressed in high-crested helmets and armor as they each hold a shield in 1 hand and a lengthy spear in the other. The central figure sits on 1 knee facing left as the 2 others stand to either side of him, striding toward their fallen foe as they pierce him with their spears. Alternatively, Side B presents the image of a soldier, likely Achilles, flanked by a pair of standing figures or attendants draped in long, bordered himations. Size: 15.2" H (38.6 cm)
Also dressed in armor and a helmet, Achilles strides right while looking left and carries a spear and Boeotian shield with a short sword strapped to his waist. His companions face inward, also holding spears or walking sticks. Scrolling vines of palmettes adorn the field and neck of the amphora with 3 on the neck and 4 between each scene accompanied by a hanging lotus bud that falls below each handle. A horizontal band of ray motif stretches up from the foot, followed by a register of polka dots. The area above the figures is additionally decorated with a ring of vertical striations, while a lustrous black glaze envelops the rim, handles, and foot of the elegant vessel.
Ancient Athenian painters, including the painter of this vessel, took advantage of the large size of Attic vases which gave them more room to explore their techniques, overlap figures, present complex interactions between figures, create depth and attempt renderings of perspective. These techniques are certainly present in the Iliad-inspired scenes that we see here.
Achilles was the son of the nereid or sea nymph Thetis and the mortal Peleus, king of the Myrmidons. Renowned as the mightiest warrior of the army of Agamemnon in the Trojan War, during his childhood, Thetis dipped Achilles in the waters of the River Styx which rendered him invincible, except for the section of his heel by which Thetis held him; hence the term "Achilles' heel."

FINE CHINESE WARRING STATES FUNERARY BRONZE SHORT SWORD...**First Time At Auction**
East Asia, China, Warring States Period, ca. 475 to 221 BCE. A lovely short sword - known as a duan jian - that is cast from bronze via the lost wax technique. The stocky sword features a double-edged blade with sharpened peripheries, a prominent midrib, a pointed tip, and a discoid pommel on top ensures that their hand did not accidentally slip off mid-swing - although a bronze sword from this era probably never saw use in battle. Chinese metalworkers developed smelting techniques for iron and steel around 500 BCE and by 300 BCE most weapons were made of iron. However, this sword was probably made to serve as a grave good, a ceremonial mark of high status. This piece must have been buried in a particularly airless and water-free grave to be so well preserved! Size: 14.75" L x 1.75" W (37.5 cm x 4.4 cm); blade only: 11.25" L x 1.5" W (28.6 cm x 3.8 cm)

- ESTERIO SEGURA MIXED MEDIA - "EL CONQUISTADOR"
ESTERIO SEGURA MIXED MEDIA - "EL CONQUISTADOR" (1997)Esterio Segura (Cuban, b. 1970). "El Conquistador" watercolor, ink, and graphite on paper, 1997. Signed and dated on lower right. Titled on lower left. A large-scale composition by Cuban contemporary artist Esterio Segura titled "El Conquistador" and mounted in an attractive custom frame. The piece features a male Conquistador figure standing in profile while staring at a flame burning in his extended left hand and raising a short sword in his right hand. Blue and yellow feathers crown his head, and he presents a handsome bearded visage. He wears a metal chest plate adorned with crossed arrow motifs, a golden belt buckle decorated with the head of a bull with eating utensils attached to the belt, yellow shorts, and lower leg wraps, one securing a knife. Indeed the Conquistador has a double meaning. One, referring more obviously to the Spanish, the other to the people of Cuba who managed to survive all the conquistadors who arrived in Cuba, thus making them equally conquistadors. The figure on the cart sporting yellow plumes represents the native Taino Indians who were later wiped out by the Spanish. Interestingly, the figure stands in a modest raft-like structure perhaps representing the primitive aspects of the island with oars extending from the sides, eight red flags decorating the front end as well as a license plate that reads "PARTICULAR HBO1102 CUBA" flanked by miniature palm trees. An intriguing painting with layers of political/sociological subtext. Size: 47.5" L x 33" W (120.6 cm x 83.8 cm) Size (frame): 51.5" L x 36.5" W (130.8 cm x 92.7 cm)
About the artist: Born in Santiago de Cuba, Esterio Segura graduated from the Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana. His works which include painting, drawing, sculpture, and printmaking address Cuba's socio-political history with themes such as immigration, isolation, and freedom. Segura's artworks have been collected by the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA), New York (NY); Bronx Museum of the Arts, Bronx (NY); Museum of Latin American Art, Long Beach (CA); and Museum of Fine Arts, Havana, Cuba among others.
